Twelve-year-old Juan suddenly found himself alone and orphaned when his mother died and then was abandoned by an abusive father. With nowhere to turn, he took to the streets of Honduras, enduring torture by gangs and scraping together enough food to survive.

Juan dreamed of escaping his lonely and frightening existence. One day, he got on his bike and started pedaling. In a month, he traveled through Honduras to Guatemala, then Mexico and finally the US border. He managed to make it undetected across the border and continued his journey to Georgia in search of a distant relative.

The relative took him in and contacted Catholic Charities for assistance. Since then, Juan’s life has headed in a different direction. Through diligence and hard work, he is about to graduate from high school and plans to attend college. And, he’s just a few months away from his Legal Permanent Resident card. By the grace of God, he has survived his past and is well on his way to a bright future.
