CRS in the Archdiocese of Atlanta
CRS Operation Rice Bowl
Operation Rice Bowl is a Lenten “pray, fast, learn, donate”
program which is active in parishes and schools in the Archdiocese,
as well as the chancery. It makes the connection between love of God
and love of neighbor on a global basis and assists people with basic
necessities, education, self-sufficiency and health challenges in 100
countries, while educating parishioners on the reality of life for our
brothers and sisters around the globe.
Parish and school Rice Bowl donation checks (made out to the Archdiocese
of Atlanta, memo: Operation Rice Bowl) mailed to the CRS archdiocesan
director make it possible for 25% of the funds to benefit Refugees and
Asylees in the Archdiocese. Please send ORB donations to Susan S. Sullivan,
director of Parish & Social Justice Ministries, Catholic Charities,
680 W. Peachtree St. NW. Atlanta, GA 30308. The remaining 75% of those
funds will then be forwarded to CRS for international projects, in keeping
with CRS policy.
CRS Fair Trade
Fair Trade sales can be held in parishes or schools at any
time throughout the year. A sale offers opportunities to learn about
our neighbors in other countries while supporting their efforts as farmers,
artists and craftspeople at a fair compensation. Participants can select
from beautiful Fair Trade handcrafts, delicious coffee and rich chocolate.
A demonstration sale is held at the chancery after Thanksgiving.
For information on how to conduct a sale, contact Colleen Smith at csmith@archatl.com or
404-885-7472.
CRS Food Fast Retreats
Food Fast provides high school and middle school students with a
structured retreat which helps them understand the food insecurity,
a daily experience for millions of people around the world. All materials
are provided free of charge. For information about conducting a Food
Fast, contact Colleen Smith at csmith@archatl.com or
404-885-7472.
CRS Speaker Tours
April 24-29: Behold: Peace in the Holy
Land; The Parents Circle–Families Forum Speakers Tour
Speaker Tours help parishioners and students hear first hand about
conditions and challenges in other countries from someone who lives
there. In partnership with the CRS Regional Office, Parish & Social
Justice Ministries of Catholic Charities supports CRS speaker tours
and other events (including Fair Trade Sales, Food Fast and immersion
opportunities) and helps spread the word. Look for events in JUST
a bit, which is sent by e-mail to justice advocates, and
events posted on the Catholic Charities website under Parish & Social
Justice Ministries.
