About the Race
Scott’s Run began in honor of Scott Starratt, a
Marietta, GA. native, and officer of the INS (now the Department
of Homeland Security). He stood out among his peers for his kindness and
compassion for these foreign children who ended up in detention. Scott died
in an automobile accident in 2001. All proceeds go directly to Catholic
Charities’ Children Programs in his honor so that these youngsters have
legal representation and are afforded every opportunity for a chance of
a new life in America.
Each year more than 10,000 foreign children without proper documentation
are found in the United States. Many are victims of abuse,
abandonment, trafficking, prostitution and modern day slavery.
Subsequently many end up in United States custody and are placed in deportation
proceedings around the country. The
Immigrant Children’s Advocacy Project (ICAP) of Catholic
Charities Atlanta represents children who are found or sent
to the Atlanta District Immigration Court service area (NC, SC, GA, AL,
MS, LA). In the past year, the Immigrant Children’s Advocacy Project has
helped more than 800 unaccompanied children.
One of Catholic Charities’ Children Program’s best stories
is of Mei-Mei, a young Chinese girl whose parents sold her to
smugglers as a slave and prostitute. This little girl had been placed on
a small boat crowded with other children bound for the United States but
the children were discovered off the California Coast and subsequently sent
to Atlanta to be housed at the Georgia Baptist Children’s Home under the
“Hope Program”. Catholic Charities’ staff and a volunteer attorney took on
her case eventually gaining a legal visa for her as a Special Immigrant Juvenile
Status (SIJS) under a special program authorized by Congress. Placed with
foster parents, Mei-Mei finished high school and is now enrolled in college.
Mei-Mei is doing great and lives happily in Atlanta. The winner of the Scott’s Run
5K wins the Mei-Mei Trophy in honor of vulnerable children like this young
Chinese girl.
