About the Race

The Children's Project began when Catholic Charities Atlanta agreed to represent Mei-Mei, an undocumented Chinese girl who had been found off the coast of California in a small boat with other children. She was sent to Atlanta and placed in the Georgia Baptist Children's Home under the management of Scott Starratt. Catholic Charities gained legal status for her. Today she remains in Atlanta and attends college.

Scott's Run is named in honor of Scott Starratt. Scott, an employee of the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) (now called the Department of Homeland Security—Immigration and Customs Enforcement), managed and cared for foreign children who were placed in the Georgia Baptist Children's Home, (safe and temporary living quarters for foreign, undocumented children) until they were returned to their country or placed in foster care. Catholic Charities Atlanta provided legal representation and counsel for over 300 of these children.

Catholic Charities Atlanta continues representing foreign children who are the most underserved population in the United States today:

Seventeen-year-old Oscar from Central America fled on-going abuse from his father. Catholic Charities Atlanta won Special Immigrant Protection for him.

Damijal, a 17-year-old Croatian refugee, underwent a kidney transplant. Catholic Charities Atlanta helped his parents file for their citizenship so that he would automatically become a citizen before he becomes 18. This allowed him to receive the anti-rejection medication he needs to survive.

Catholic Charities Atlanta gained asylum status for Cleo, who witnessed the murder of her parents and little brother in Rwanda. She was placed with a foster family and now attends college. Today, she volunteers as a translator and helps other refugee women.
